monitoring e-mails and calls - it can happen
so, I made this assumption about what the government can/cannot be recording as far as telco calls (domestic/international)....
1 minute = 1MB (mp3 quality)
in the next couple of years, we can see 5-50TB hard drives. I'm arguing that the government can conceivably be recording everything and not all on hard drives. Maybe tape is cheaper still. I really don't know.
I'm not arguing that the government IS recording everything. I'm just saying they have the capability as far as storage goes.
Echelon. Carnivore (supposedly failed but I am sure it was meant to fail so there wouldn't be a public uproar). What say you? - plus, I haven't seen any more uproar from EU about Echelon anymore.
tape is a lot cheaper. They can record onto HD in real time, transfer it onto tapes, and retrieve only what they need. I don't think the big brother is interested in conversation on PC vs MAC though.
not sure if they do record everything, but they can. they definitely monitor everything in real time and will probably flag any suspicious items and record those.
